The math, made simple

What grade do I need on my final?

This calculator answers one question: what is the lowest score you can get on your final exam and still finish the course with the grade you want?

It uses your grade before the final, the course grade you are aiming for, and how much the final exam is worth. It also shows the course grade you would finish with after a 0% or a 100% on the final, so you can see the whole range before the exam.

How the final grade calculator works

  • Current grade: your course percentage on everything graded before the final.
  • Desired course grade: the overall percentage you want to finish the course with.
  • Final exam weight: the share of the whole course grade that the final is worth.

The work before the final counts for everything except the final's weight. Whatever is still missing from your desired grade has to come from the final exam.

Required final score = (desired grade − current grade × (100% − final weight)) ÷ final weight

The required score is rounded up to one decimal place, so it is never lower than what you actually need.

Final grade calculator example

A final exam worth 30% of the course.

Worked example

Current grade
82%
Desired course grade
85%
Final exam weight
30%
Required final score
92.0%
  1. Work before the final counts for 70%: 82% × 0.70 = 57.4 points.
  2. An 85% course grade needs 8557.4 = 27.6 more points.
  3. The final is worth 30%: 27.6 ÷ 0.30 = 92.0%.

So a 92.0% on the final gives exactly 85%. With a 0% on the final you would finish at 57.4%, and with a 100% you would finish at 87.4%.

What if I need more than 100% on the final?

If the required score is above 100%, your desired grade cannot be reached with a normal final exam. Qeemio shows the score you would need and the highest course grade still possible, so you can choose a realistic goal. If your course offers extra credit, check your syllabus for how it counts.

A few other results are worth knowing:

  • Target already secured: even a 0% on the final keeps you at or above your desired grade.
  • Final worth 0%: the final cannot change your course grade, so your current grade is compared with your target.
  • Final worth 100%: your current grade no longer matters, and the score you need equals your desired course grade.

How much does my final affect my grade?

The higher the final exam weight, the more your final score can move your course grade. The gap between a 0% and a 100% on the final is always as wide as the final's weight.

  • With a current grade of 82% and a final worth 20%, your course grade can end anywhere from 65.6% to 85.6%.
  • With a current grade of 82% and a final worth 40%, your course grade can end anywhere from 49.2% to 89.2%.

These results assume your final is scored out of 100% and weighted exactly as your syllabus describes. Curves, rounding, and extra credit vary by course, so check with your instructor for official results.
